Can You Use a Rental Car for Uber or Lyft?
By Frank's Auto Rentals Team · July 5, 2026
Yes, you can use a rental car for Uber or Lyft — but only if the vehicle and you meet the platform's requirements, and only under the terms of your rental agreement. Here's what to know.
Platform approval is separate from the rental
Renting a qualifying car does not guarantee Uber or Lyft will accept you or the vehicle. Each platform runs its own driver screening and vehicle inspection process.
Confirm the platform's current vehicle age, condition, and inspection requirements before you rent.
Driver requirements
Uber and Lyft require drivers to meet age, experience, and background-check standards. These are independent of the car you drive.
Our minimum renter age is 21, but rideshare platforms often require 25. Confirm before applying.
Insurance and permitted use
Insurance is not included in our rental. Rideshare platforms provide certain coverage while you're on a trip, but gaps exist. Confirm coverage with the platform and an insurance professional before driving.
Your rental agreement defines permitted use. Indicate rideshare as your intended use on your application so we can confirm the right terms.
The bottom line
A rental can be a great way to start driving for Uber or Lyft without buying a car — just confirm platform eligibility and your rental agreement's terms first.
